Old sterling silver glass encased faceted garnet bale cigarette card, sterling silver neckwire, (pendant 32mm x 95mm), one-of-a-kind *In the late 19th century cigarettes were being sold in packs and marketed throughout the United States. These paper cigarette packs were reinforced by small cards inserted into the package. These cards were designed with attractive prints that served as a form of advertisement for the cigarette, and people began to collect and trade these cigarette cards, a practice called cartophily. Many famous contemporary artists were commissioned for the drawings. The advent of war in 1940 halted production, although cigarette cards have remained popular with collectors.
